Attraction, desire, and long-term attachment are often discussed as a single phenomenon. In the research literature they map to largely separate signaling systems, with different molecules and different timescales.
Attachment is closely associated with oxytocin and vasopressin, neuropeptides studied for their role in bonding and trust. Desire involves a different set of pathways, including central melanocortin signaling, which is studied independently of the vascular mechanisms most people associate with the topic.
This separation explains an experience many people report but find hard to articulate: that closeness and desire do not always move together. They are not failures of one system but the ordinary behavior of two.
Research on these pathways remains active. What it offers right now is less a solution than a vocabulary, a way to describe what is happening with more precision than the usual language allows.
